Run for All :D DD

The biannual Cross-Country Carnival was a resounding success! From what I heard. Despite this being the crunch time of deadlines, there was a record turnout of almost 40 crossers – regardless of race, timing and  …(sorry I tried).

But which didn’t include me. #sadsadstory. For those who, like me, are sad to have missed out on so much fun, here are some sound bytes from fellow crossers. For those still reeling from the adrenaline, keep it going! :D

Natalie Kuan’s 1-min Carnival Round-up
NUS cross country held its biannual cross carnival on the 20th of March. Proving that there’s more to cross country than simply running laps around the track, the carnival drew a stellar turnout for an evening of good company, fun, games and food organized by the new cross committee nominees. The carnival kicked off with a 2.4km time trial, which saw many hitting their PB’s. GOOD JOB YOU GUYS! :D (especially Norman & Siew for being the fastest runners, Jiahao & E-main for most improved!)

Time trial aside, it was a close fight to the finish between Tristan and Madan’s team in the 4×100 mix-team relay. Down to the wire, once the baton, er, banana we mean, was in Madan’s hands there was no stopping the speedy Gonzales from clinching 1st place for his team.

Not to forget the very exciting game of human foosball punctuated by screaming girls, shouting guys and good tackles, NUS Cross Country’s resident striker Sarah scored 2 goals just minutes into the game. (girl power!)

All in all, the event was a welcome respite amid looming deadlines, tests and presentations.  Looking forward to the next one!

Brought to you by Natalie Kuan, reporting live from the track!

Natalie & Shanqi - beaming bananas!

Tricia Chong’s “10 Reasons Why Carnival Was Thoroughly Enjoyable” (and how I missed out so bad)
I thoroughly enjoyed the cross carnival! Maybe because it was…

1) Seeing people run & seeing your teammates improve, makes me feel really happy for them (it’s really therapeutic don’t you think? compared to sitting long hours of completing deadlines, or listening to profs looking at notes blahblahblah)
2) Seeing familiar faces who’ve brought years of fun to me & also inspired me in some way or another after such a LONG time,
3) My team won foosball (YEAHH TEAM 3 you guys rock) but honestly as mentioned, the credit all goes to Sarah the soccer star, Jiarong whose legs became mega flexible after acupuncture, Tesh & and his Mauritius body, Jackie & Wilson’s awesome head-ball, Joseph’s long legs, and maybe last but not least, the screams of Zakiyah and I. And also probably, Rama, who enjoyed kicking into me instead of aiming into space. It was a really funny game, I enjoyed watching others play while i just screamed. even when my team wasn’t playing.
4) We had birthday celebrations for March babies!
5) We had luckydraw
6) Cool prizes were given out. I won nothing. but it was still amusing to see others reactions when they won something hahahaha
7) We shared food & snacks while staying healthy :D
8) We camwhored!
9) So much screaming (esp from girls) & laughing involved.
10) It was organized by people who have passion to serve the team.. brings me tears of joy! :’)

Well I kinda have a word limit (ooops), so I shall end here for today, how can I not love this team?

It’s almost a week gone by and Tricia (right) is obviously still feeling the adrenaline rush very much.
!!!!!!!!!

Jackie, Zakiyah & Tricia. Human foosball FTW

Bhavesh Rajwani’s thoughts in minibytes
I think the cross carnival 2012 was quite fun. 2.4 was the only ‘serious’ training, and it was good to be relaxed and not focus on the track, for a change. Games achieved their intended purpose, and everybody worked with everybody to have fun in the spirit of friendly competition. There were more prizes than I expected to be honest, and there was enough food to go around. I think the sprints were the highlight, especially since Tristan wouldn’t stop complaining about Madan’s win.

He had spikkesss

Bhavesh's team - see Tristan looks like he is all out to nail it down! :D

See Tricia, your max word limit was Bhavesh’s min word limit.

Koh Kai Ming’s 150-word composition (heh it really sounds like one!)
20th March was a date that most of the cross country members have been looking forward to. It’s the annual Cross Country carnival. We all knew that it is going to be a fun filled session with lots of nice food. I enjoyed how everyone participated actively in the games and added extra fun to it with all the screaming and laughing. The lucky draw was another event that took the attention of all the runners. Everyone was hoping that they will get to win the nice looking leather covered book. The food was the highlight of the event. After been through all the games and concentrating so hard on the lucky draw, it was time to relax and enjoy the awesome food prepared by the elects of the new committee. It was truly a day to bring the team closer together and a day for us to remember.

say cheese! (no, bananas!)

Last picture for good measure.
Because girls always need more airtime :D

Kudos to the organizers for a night of crazy fun and laughter. Oh by the way, these are also prospective candidates for our upcoming committee, which means we can look forward to a crazy year ahead… banana relays for training? :P

Signing off and promising I’ll try my best to come next week,
Kelly

As requested by Tricia, here’s one of my blog posts from my personal blog..  slightly edited. do pardon the slightly personal albeit bohliao comments ;)

The beginning of December involved 2 birthdays of my closest friends in the cross team, stan chart, and Peter’s farewell.

A 6-part Harry Potter marathon was held on the 2nd of dec at Siew’s place. I was awake for the first 3 movies, and died the remaining 3 movies ahaha. Anyway, since gc’s birthday was on the 3rd, the team suprised him with a cake at midnight in the middle of the movie!

5th was the Stanchart Marathon so i kaypoh kaypoh went down to support.. In the end it was too hot to cheer them on at the finish line. =XXX So I moved around the place from shade to shade, and eventually went to Marina Sq in search of Gong cha. I hadn’t tried it yet so I figured why not go early to buy… 10am was abit too early tho.. :( ((

It was a pretty eventful week.. :D

The first time i watched a real track competition was 5 years ago.. (dont include those school inter-house games stuff). In my secondary school, we only had cross country. there was no track. However, somewhere that year in 2005, our coach asked if any few of us wanted to join track! we were like… “huh, race on the track!?!?!” quite boring. plus, only about 2-3 of us would go to represent the school. so malu. we didn’t know what it was really like so, nevermind. dont sign up loh.

despite rejecting the offer, one of my closest teammates was actually still considering it, and upon telling me so, we both went farfaraway from school, to the foreign choachukang stadium that was like in the middle of nowhere. We just wanted to watch people run. That was the first time we watched track nationals. we were the only 2 random girls that didnt have the same school uniform as anyone there, with no school to sit with, no runners representing our school, ppl would think we were just some random girls stalking some pro and what not. but still,

Whoa.

i felt, these people really got guts. every single one of them. just look at them run. it says it all

it was a similar, and yet different feeling from watching xcountry.

eversince then, my teammate has been racing in track every year till today.

IVP had ended about 8 days ago, and coming down to watch people run for 2days brought back that feeling again. In fact, i felt it so much more this time round because i knew the story behind each of our crossers running for NUS whom i had come for…

for siew, she had an injury before the sem started, i remembered her long talks with mr quek and her frustration of being unable to do workouts back then. she fought hard, it seemed more like her fall after crossing the line didnt impact her as much as the race itself. and her last 100m kick. seriously, whoa. she wasnt gonna let her competitors bring her down throughout the race.

for michelle, who fell off her bike just a few weeks before the race. she couldnt run for a while, but she did come back to train when there was one week left – i mean, eventhough we all know shes fast, eventhough she still had that big gap with the 2nd runner, her face said it all. she really raced one of her hardest in the rain. it was a nice ending for her last ivp race in NUS

for mel, she looked like she was struggling for her first 2 rounds. and we realised why on the 3rd. despite losing a sole, it didnt stop her from fighting

and we have zakiyah, our dearest captain who was initially upset about the outcome, but she took it in within her stride. and moved on with her life continuing to cheer on for our other teammates and etc and an awersome 4×400

and theres yati, my ac senior whom i first met after o’s, for remaining calm and composed throughout the whole time – well at least in front of me. and i admire her for that.

of course for the reserves, theres caisang, my idol who never let anything that happened outside her running life affect her during training. and we can always expect her to be there for us. it should never be taken for granted.

and theres meihui who has been improving tremendously since before the sem started, and despite her back injury, shes also RH’s current RR capt!

and emelyne, the cute little girl who would run from KE VII to macritchie on a sunday from 6+ in the morning, and still do about another 10 km with us.

Moving on to our guys’ side,

we have norman, coming back to running after taking a year off, and his steeple story below, kudos to you for not letting your previous race experience up on youtube stop you from chasing steeples. i mean if you think of it logically, nothing should get in the way of stopping you from doing what you love. and i really respect you for that.

giant jayanta, making his comeback after 2 years, and for whatever that happened in your head before the race or even falling down during the race – that ended up giving you a BIG swelling on your foot, im sure it took more than just the courage of your lungs to get that gold. your parents must’ve been really proud of you :)

madan, whom i knew since world cup period, has been training hard for AUG. achieving PB for 1500 during SingOpen and being our most inspiring athlete of ivp, congrats you’re finally in! :)

kenny, who has been training hard alongside with madan. and also had to deal with our stampedes on tuesdays & fridays

giri and his first 10km IVP on the track, who has come so far since his first day in cross (after reading his post below)

aaron, who had to do 1500 & 5000 BOTH on the same day and still came in 2nd for 5K. He was even able to joke about requesting us to take photos for him only in the 1st round cos he would look unglam on the subsequent rounds.

mok, whom we all know has always been fast, for not being complacent whatsoever, and remaining consistent for all rounds, despite knowing the big gap between him and 2nd place, he still worked on achieving a new record for 10k.

melvin, our patient ex-captain who has been dilligently coming for all our trainings & macritchie runs, and still having to cope with being the convening captain for RR with emelyne and the life of a busy medicine student.

eeghim, for his discipline to even train on his own since his internship

pat, who actually stopped his usual own long runs and finally joined us for training for the sake of 1500

yannick, who’d never fail to remain friendly and welcoming with us hehe

teshil, who just came back to joining us again this sem and still perform well for SUniG with his baby hair

dex, who on top of being the biathlon captain, still came back to support and trial for steeple

and theres baldwin, for coming back after so LONGGG to throw for the discus & shot put

last but not least, jinyang, who pops out of his busy business life, having not trained at all and gave many of us a great show with his javelin throws. he really made javelin looked like it was a form of an art that only a few could master. hahahahah

i take my hat off to each and every one of you, and also thank you for the great performance because cheering for you guys with the rest of the teammates has been, well, kinda fun. watching you guys during trainings & ivp has been inspiring for me too, because you guys are so driven. i mean first of all, you guys were able to remain focused knowing so many eyes were watching you. it must have been quite a journey for each of you to get to where you are right now. i guess it also shows that even the life of a great athlete doesnt come that easy, and should not let obstacles/complacency/school get in the way what you want. in fact it applies to everyone. possibly something i need to reflect upon for myself. heh. oh well, its exam period guys, rmb an apple a day keeps the doctor AWAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! study hard, eat your fruits, get your rest, keep running. :)

your OTHER friendly TM (hehe),

Tricia

Hi all

This post is dedicated to the X country team. I want to share with you the recent race that I have gone through, and by doing so I hope to motivate and inspire all of you.

Recently I embarked on a journey to Desaru, eastern Malaysia for a half ironman distance triathlon (2km swim, 90km bike, 21km run). Being a casual runner, occasional swimmer and a random biker on the road, it took me great courage to sign up for one of the toughest races in the world. I started endurance sports (particularly running) 2 years ago, and continued the sport due to the influences around me. I have friends who are have unlimited stamina (Eric!), who, against all odds can complete trainings (Melvin, Patrick, Fabian), who win medals every now and then (Madan!) and who break their personal PBs more often than not. These people, whether or not they are from X country, are my motivations. I moved to triathlon just to try out the sport out of the blue.

So the multi-disciplinary sport which I signed up (and had no idea how tough it was) came sooner, no later and I was somewhat unprepared for it. Sometimes I wondered if I had taken things too fast. Nonetheless since the race day has already come, I just told myself to give it a try. After a gruesome 6 hours and 50 minutes of non-stop action in the sea and on road, I finally crossed the finishing line. The swim at the sea, despite the current and the constant contact with other swimmers made me feel extremely tired and irritated; the ride on the hills (no flat roads!) pushed my thighs and calves to the limit; and the run under the sweltering heat took away my soul as I lifted my foot and placed them one in front of another. The entire journey was unimaginably gruesome and every single second spent on the sea and road was another second thought of giving up, physically and mentally.

But no, I told myself, for there were more reasons to persevere than to give up. You see, giving up is really easy; you just get off  after the 1st loop of swim, or the 1st loop of bike, or just run straight to the resort room and take a nap/sleep for the rest of the day. But think of the consequences thereafter. The journey to giving up is just temporary, the lingering thought of you who gave up will stay forever. Someday you will look back and thought “I should have just completed the race” and there you go, regretting why you did not continue just a little more to cross the finishing line.

So yes, I told myself not to give up despite the extreme weather and the fatigue, because one day I WILL regret when I look back. I promised myself to travel all the way far from home, to race, to complete, and to go home. Simple equation, simple solution. I told myself I will do this race for the people who motivate and inspire me (as above), and I will do this race for the people who support me all along; be it the extra runs they did with you (Fabian, Patrick), the extra swim sessions (Richard! Jovin! Sarah Tan!) they promised and the extra bike rounds or even bike tips (Jayanta!) they were with you. So there, by completing the race, you did little promises and indirectly not “wasted” someone else’s time on you (kinda crude way to say, but you know what I mean).

Anyways, some take home messages to ponder: I was once just an ordinary person (ok still ordinary) and decided to do something with my life. I trained and ran, although not as fast as all of you, but I still continued and persevered on, and completed races which people never even thought of doing them. Do remember that in times of hardships; you are not alone because some way or another, the people who you have worked with will directly or indirectly influence your decision to race and to complete the race. In times of hardship and you really feel like giving up, take a breather and think of the past trainings and people around you and your loved ones, and you will realize that you are not alone and you will, against all odds, continue and overcome any obstacles in front of you.

Most of us are here to win, but some of us (like me) are here just to gather achievements. Whatever it is, the feeling of crossing the finishing line is priceless, and for that, you just have to persevere on until the end, for in the end, it is only you against yourself. If you can conquer yourself today, you can conquer yourself another day too!

So don’t give up, no matter what it is, by toeing the starting line you have already won half the battle, for you took up the courage to challenge yourself, and by crossing the finishing line, you will conquer yourself!

The GodzillaSource: Wikipedia and storyrhyme.com

‘The first film was simply titled Godzilla (1954).

In the original film, Godzilla was portrayed as a terrible and destructive monster.
Following the success of Godzilla, Toho started filming a quickie sequel called Godzilla Raids Again.
In this film, a new Godzilla was set up to fight another dinosaur-like creature, Anguirus.
This second film started a trend for Godzilla films, where Godzilla would fight other giant monsters.
In his fifth film, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Godzilla took the role of a hero.
From that point on, to the end of the Showa series, Godzilla stayed a hero, protecting Japan against attacks from other monsters, aliens, etc.
For a period, Godzilla stopped its runs in the cinemas.
At one point, Godzilla even adopted a son, Minilla, in Son of Godzilla, who would make appearances in later Showa-era films.’

The first time I had a serious relatively longer distance run (1.6km) was in 1998. I was forced to run in the form of NAPFA test.
In that first occasion, running was portrayed as a terrible and tedious activity. But I managed to complete it nevertheless.
Following the success of that virgin long run, I went on to secondary school where I had to attempt a longer distance run (3km).
This second long run was the mother of my future longer distance runs, where I eventually completed my furthest distance in AHM (2008).
In my #672nd run, running became more competitive for me as I had to represent my unit in running competitions.
For a period after I ORD, I stopped running.
At NUS, I took up running again.

Godzilla adopted a son to spice up his otherwise dull battle life.
Like Godzilla, I adopted running to spice up my otherwise dull school life.

Godzilla needed Minilla.
I need to run.
Godzilla loved Minilla.
I love to run.

Why do I run? Why don’t I run?

So Alan, Roy and I decided we would go to Phuket and try out running on foreign soil. This decision was made, if I can remember properly, on a Tuesday in October 2009 after training.

None of us regret the decision.

Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao Beach - as viewed from our room/porch.

About 7 months later and $600+ less rich, we have returned from Thailand’s most expensive island. It’s been a long ride with a lot of planning done by Roy, and a lot of individual budgeting and personal training done by all the 3 of us. We all came back with something: cheap slippers (me), hot shots by the beach (Roy), a nasty cold (Alan), and jellyfish stings (all of us). But more than just the superficial, the trip has been a tough few days negotiating 3 separate personalities. In many ways, what happened on the trip to Phuket could be a reflection of our own team.

Maya Bay

Hills & Sky at Maya Bay - too beautiful, too many tourists

Unlike Redang, where everything seemed to have gone on quite smoothly (according to the facebook videos/ photos, credit goes to Nic Tey’s planning), Phuket was planned in theory. There was no programme, no route, no guide. And perhaps that was what made everything so damn unpredictable. Everything was divided into a pre-race (Saturday) and post-race (Sunday afternoon to Monday) idea of what we would do.

Alan & Roy

Alan takes a photo, Roy makes a point

Roy and Alan might not say it, but there were times in Phuket when the 3 of us were literally at each others’ throats. We had expected discord, but I was a bit unprepared for the way we would react, myself included, under stress: wrong directions, people tailing us in Phuket town, a high tide at Phi Phi Island that screwed up our snorkeling trip, the attack of the jellyfish, and drivers trying to scam us. And many times things did screw up: we kena scammed, we got stung, we didn’t get what we wanted, we -

Alan & the Wave

And Alan almost kena knocked down by waves at Maya Bay

I would expect to conclude: “… and this taught me a lot more about my friends that anything ever could.” But, no. Not really. I did learn that Roy is a master picture taker and Alan is a garang explorer who hates routine, and that I can eat Thai street food without needing to do serious berak, and that we can all sit through air turbulence for 15 minutes and joke about throwing up while the other passengers think we’re crazy.

Pig Butcher

The only non-halal street store at the Sunday market

But, like being in a team, we’re all equally crazy. We’re all obsessed about something: Roy is obsessed with getting it right, Alan is obsessed with getting it cheap, and I’m obsessed with being boring :)

Alan eats prata

Alan shows off his banana-carnation milk prata. The makcik who made it looks on.

Somehow this obsession kept us in one piece. And we can still run together, we can still see each other every week. We can still say: ok fine, you were right, then share drinks/food later.

Group photo

Group photo at Maya Bay - And, yes, we made it back alive.

And everything’s all right. And that’s how a team should be.

hello everybodyzzzzz. its the holidays and I AM LOVIN’ IT! i hope you are too! :)

part i) SUMMIT

i shall share with you guys the main gist of the stuff we learnt at summit.

7 highly effective habits to living your life:

1. Be Proactive! BE-BE PROACTIVE! well it just basically means having the freedom to choose & influence your own life (:

2. Begin with the End in Mind = based on the principle that mental creation precedes physical creation.

3. Put First Things First! – prioritizezxzxz

4. Think Win-Win – effective, long-term relationships require cooperation by seeking mutual benefit. wheee (:

5. Seek first to Understand, then to be Understood. by seeking to understand others before expressing your views you become a persom whom others trust. (:

6. Synergize.  THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS.

7. Sharpen the Saw. Taking time out to nurture your body, mind, heart, and soul. so that you can become more effective in all areas of your life. personally, sometimes i forget about this because i tend to put settling my own deadlines first before giving time for myself. :\

anw yes summit was FUN AWESOME BOOMZ etc. we trekked, caved, whitewaterrafted, campfired, durian-suppered, got to know more teamnus peeps from other CCAs and did all sorts of other things haha. i got souvenirs from every activity i did in the form of scratches and scars and im proud to say its ALL WORTH IT. im so sad theyre fading away now cos i will have nothing else to look back on except facebook pictures :/ but whatever it is, im glad i got the chance to go. & i thank you guys for voting me as your team manager :D

(oh yah omg i almost totally forgot. our cross presentation during NUS summit by azrul & nicktey! check out our nus xcountry fbk page. i only uploaded the 4 bits of videos http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=8336249787&ref=ts p.s. alot of effort was put into the videos so you must really ooh&aahhh as you watch it okay)

part ii) THE FUN PART

YEAH OKAY SO LIKE, TODAY, I WENT TO MACRITCHIE which i havent been to in like WEEKZzzzzzzz. and zomg. there were like 5 girls, and 2 guys. THE GIRLS > GUYS X 2 . girl power!!! but i think the distance the guys covered is like twice of ours. hurr okay nevermind. i think the passion runnners were too passionate about their run ytd that now theyre trying to recover from it hence the tiny no. of guys today. hohoho! GIRLS FTW. OKAY. SO today, the grounds of macritchie were sticky, muddy, with dirty water puddles here and there like yuckyuckyuck and while our girls were learning new ballet moves by tip-toeing and jumping across the puddles, melvin&azrul were not-so-secretly training for the upcoming ninja warrior battle during the run. With the agility of ninjas, they swiftly crossed the slippery rocky terrains of macritchie with ease Zooming past the girls THREE TIMES who were moving at the speed of snails practising teamwork by holding on to each other like we did in datuk so that we wouldnt fall. Nonetheless, with the power of 5, our girls made it through the route safely. (:

okay. so anyway, the dates and details havent been confirmed yet, but as your team manager i will be managing a team of ninja cheerleaders who will be providing service of our oh-so-powerful-awesome-lungs for our FEARLESS NINJA WARRIORS. & as of today our cheerleaders are: Baldwin, Dex, Eric, SiewMin, myself, & err. still recruiting. (pls contact me if you are interested!) and who are our ninja warriors??? SECRET. ninja peeps are v secretive one kay. CANNOT let our competitors who stumble upon the site find out who they are (other than melvin&azrul) ! SSSHHH!!!

anyhoo. Pratapazzi Seng is very excited to post another entry. he seems to have the latest boomz gossips about everything which i Still have no clue about!! bleagh. STAY TUNED!

Tricia :D

(Rant alert, based on an event that took place a few hours ago)

It’s official: you can NOT run on grass at public stadiums. Doing so will apparently cause you to be confronted by a stadium official from SSC & a member of the public who has nothing to do but tell you to “don’t run so much.”

Of course, you need to appreciate the professionalism & courtesy of the stadium staff – who prescribe the “rules”, without reason & without motive, after watching you run for a whole 45 minutes. “If you let them see you,” he warns, pointing in the obscure direction of nowhere, invoking even more obscure regulations.

No wonder Singapore sports is down in the dumps: grass is more important than the person playing the sport XD

At a public press conference yesterday, NUS X-Country’s Director of Publicity, Mr Melvin Lee unveiled their latest advertising campaign “Run with the Handsomes “. 2 rising stars were also introduced to spearhead their campaign. Jayanta Ng and Alan Kwek were chosen among 20 hopefuls to become NUS X-country’s latest poster boys. Mr Lee was quoted as saying, “Forget the Singtel Grid Girls, these guys are smoking hot. I have no doubt that they will make our advertising campaign a real hit.”

Jayanta is definitely a well known face in the NUS community as the number one Pageant King. With his clean cut looks and bashful smile, he has set many a girl’s heart a flutter on the NUS Kent Ridge Campus. Alan Kwek on the other hand is an accomplished model who bagged the “Most Yan Dao Tycoon in Singapore” award at the Ang Mo Kio Hub fashion show in May. He followed that up by appearing in various fashion shows in Australia and Jakarta in June.

Many insiders in the NUS sports club fraternity have lauded this shrewd move by NUS cross country. They believe that this campaign will boost the number of girls joining cross country in the coming academic year. Skeptics on the other hand have lambasted the sly and wily Mr Melvin Lee who has often exploited the good looks of members of the NUS cross country team to boost the enrollment numbers. Last year’s campaign featured former Man Hunt winner Sith Roy Leong and soap opera star Kelvin Ling who is affectionately known to fans as Mr Muscles.

Skeptic or not, catch these handsome stars at the Matriculation Fair at NUS on the 24th of July and 27th to 29th July at Multipurpose Sports Hall 2 (Cross Country Booth). Be part of the excitement. But just be wary of being crushed by squealing female fans.
