You cannot run on the grass

September 13, 2009 · 4 Comments

(Rant alert, based on an event that took place a few hours ago)

It’s official: you can NOT run on grass at public stadiums. Doing so will apparently cause you to be confronted by a stadium official from SSC & a member of the public who has nothing to do but tell you to “don’t run so much.”

Of course, you need to appreciate the professionalism & courtesy of the stadium staff – who prescribe the “rules”, without reason & without motive, after watching you run for a whole 45 minutes. “If you let them see you,” he warns, pointing in the obscure direction of nowhere, invoking even more obscure regulations.

No wonder Singapore sports is down in the dumps: grass is more important than the person playing the sport XD

PoW Tinny Run 3, 3.4km around Little India, with four beer pit stops!

September 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

3892090278_5bdd3d8d34

The Prince of Wales Backpacker Pub is proud to present the third Tinny Run – a roughly 3.4km race around the streets of Little India that incorporates 4 checkpoints where a 330ml can (or “tinny”) of beer is drunk!

The PoW Tinny Run has proven to be a great way of combining two popular past-times, and a good opportunity to meet other like-minded folk! The last two races attracted a mixed crowd of locals, expats and backpackers who were just passing through, and suffice to say that everyone had a great time!

Tinny Run 3 will be held on October 18th – start and end point is The Prince of Wales (101 Dunlop Street, Little India), with a 3pm start time (registration from 1pm-2.30pm). Entry fee is $10 before October 1st, and $20 after that date, and can be paid through paypal to info@pow.com.sg (payments must be marked “Tinny Run”) or on the day itself at registration. Maximum number of participants allowed is 48.

Entry includes all four beers during the race, free bottled water, free after race BBQ and access to shower facilities on the premises – plus live music in the beer garden! Prizes are $50 each for first male, first female and best dressed – yes, fancy dress is encouraged!

I got this info from sgrunners. Limited spaces, so register early if you want to join. Jackie, what are you waiting for? There’s beer…

Yellow Ribbons, the Prison and the Run

September 6, 2009 · 2 Comments

Yellow Ribbon Prison Run 2009
10 KM
Changi Village to Changi Prison Complex
06 Sep 09

My time: 52 mins. My excuse: still recovering from the ligament injury.

Organized by CARE network, which helps in the rehabilitation of ex-offenders, the inaugural Yellow Ribbon Prison Run 2009 was attended by about 6000 runners on Sunday, 6 Sep 09. The competitive 10 KM route started at Changi Village, going through smaller roads within the Loyang and Selarang Camp outskirts, before ending at a huge, empty field within the walls of the Changi Prison Complex. A 5.8 KM fun-run took place concurrently.

This run is probably one of the best organized runs this year. In theory, the organizers got everything right: good publicity (you’ve all seen the posters at the bus-stops), an enjoyable route, affordable sign-up prices, a reasonably nice-looking running singlet and worth-it freebies from the sponsors. The vouchers in the goodie bag are pretty substantial (Andersens’ ice cream, Café Galilee, some local attractions etc). These, plus the fact that this run is the only run so far to serve you food upon finishing, makes it really worth the time and effort on a cold, wet Sunday morning – considering I didn’t win anything.

While the route cannot be described as punishing (at least no cross-terrain or crazy hills), there were some points where the up-slopes were a bit steep. Locating water-points after these slopes was a good tactic other organisers might want to consider. Also, a rather rag-tag – but very loud –bunch of cheerleaders seemed to be stationed at every major turn.

Mok, Patrick and I were the only cross-country team people running. No guesses who won. Patrick came in 10th and won $100, I think. Their exact timings can be confirmed with them. I took a leisurely jog and tried not to compete with all the people who sprinted at the first 5 KM. Many of them died at the final up-slope before the last stretch inside Changi Prison complex. Generally speaking, there was some grass to run on, and apart from the sudden downpour an hour after the event ended, I didn’t feel very uncomfortable. I’m also quite glad that I didn’t spend too much money on transport. (Most runs on early Sunday morning require you to get to the venue in a taxi if you want to take your spot at the starting line, but the area is accessible enough for SBS buses).

That being said, however, I was discussing with Patrick that the rationale behind this run leaves me thinking. Doubtless every runner’s participation raises funds, support and awareness to programmes which helping ex-offenders & rehabilitated drug addicts. But the manner in which these goals were shown seems a bit questionable. Firstly, while prisoners performing music to keep the runners’ entertained after the run seems quite innocent, it suggests showcasing them to an approving audience. And, some runners were also wondering – why end the run inside Changi prison? Interesting thing I realised: the inmates can be heard, but you don’t see them. It gave me the feeling the place was like an exhibit.

Just some things to think about. My views, of course. But a good run makes you think too. And then helps you study later.

MR25 30k Progressive Run

August 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My first post hehe…

Date of event: 6th September

Start time: 7am at MacRitchie Reservoir Carpark

Next sunday, there will be a 30km run at MacRitchie organised by MR25 running club.

Admission is free and registration will open at 6.30am on the day itself.

They have 3 water points and you will pass by 2 of them twice, so total there are 5 times for you to hydrate yourself during the run.

I’m thinking for those people who want to do longer distance than usual next sunday, can register for this since it’s at MacRitchie also:)

An Exciting First Gazelles Run

August 27, 2009 · 1 Comment

Last week was an exciting week. On Thursday, we held our very first Gazelles run to West Coast Park. Mama Gazelles was led by Jayanta and they went on an “easy” Jayanta paced 10km run around the beautiful park. Jackie joined the group as well, his mane in full flow as it flirted with the sea breeze.

I on the other hand led Baby Gazelles on a 6km run with leonard, chee wei, mei yi, amirah, melissa and Sarah. The traffic lights were really bothersome. So we had to start, stop…grrr. But once we reached the park, it was magnificent. I always find it quite amazing that we study so close to the beautiful coastline. The sun was setting and the whole scene was lovely.

We also met contestants on the AXN show “THe biggest loser” and they were really working their socks off while we gazelles kept looking around for the cameraman. I guess everyone would like a chance to be on TV. Unlike charlene, we don;t get much air time.

The next few runs will be at different places like Kent Ridge Park, Clementi Woods. So Stay tuned for more updates. Gazelles…at the ready!!!
